There’s something magical about a Cloudland Canyon wedding — the way sunlight filters through the trees, the easygoing energy of a state park setting, and the chance for couples to truly make the day their own. For Sam and Dennis, that meant building a wedding that felt adventurous, non-traditional, and completely true to them. From their love story that began on the road in a converted Sprinter van (the very van seen above) to the way they reimagined nearly every detail of the day, this celebration was unforgettable.

Morning preparations set the tone for a relaxed, down-to-earth celebration. Sam slipped into a linen dress patterned with delicate birds — casual, comfortable, and effortlessly elegant. Dennis had his hair styled while Sam taught herself makeup just for the occasion, keeping the morning grounded in authenticity rather than convention. She wore family heirloom jewelry, treasures passed down through generations, which added a quiet layer of meaning to her look.
In the cabins, laughter mixed with concentration as friends helped one another get ready. Nothing about this day felt forced — it was simply people coming together, each in their own style, to celebrate.

Before heading to the forest, Dennis shared a first look with his mom. Her hands flew to her face as tears welled up, overcome with emotion as she saw her son dressed for his wedding day. The embrace that followed was one of those rare moments that needed no words — joy, pride, and love all woven together.
These glimpses of family connection set the tone for the day ahead: grounded, emotional, and deeply personal.

While the ceremony itself was beautiful, the couple’s private vows were the heartbeat of their Cloudland Canyon wedding. Tucked into the woods, they carved out time to read promises to one another, surrounded only by trees and the glow of autumn light.
They later described this as their favorite moment of the entire day — the most important part with the most important person. It was raw, emotional, and deeply moving, the kind of memory that lingers long after the decorations are packed away.

Their ceremony mirrored the spirit of their relationship: colorful, relaxed, and joyfully untraditional. Instead of matching outfits, their wedding party wore what made them feel comfortable — from linen trousers to flowy dresses to semi-formal looks that reflected their personalities. Brides-people and grooms-people stood side by side, chosen from siblings, lifelong friends, and those who had been part of their journey together.

The arbor itself was draped with fabric panels, accented with mason jars filled with wildflowers arranged by family. Many of the blooms were grown by Sam herself, mixed with Costco finds and garden florals, creating an arrangement that was as heartfelt as it was beautiful.

When the vows were spoken, the atmosphere shifted from playful to profoundly moving. Guests leaned forward in their seats, fully present, as Sam and Dennis promised their lives to one another before the rustling canopy. The exchange of rings was simple, heartfelt, and perfectly them — followed by cheers as they sealed their promises with a kiss.

The recessional was anything but quiet. With arms raised in triumph, the couple walked back down the aisle to Send Me On My Way by Rusted Root, beaming at their cheering guests. The joy was contagious, laughter and applause echoing through the clearing as the celebration carried into the next chapter of the day.

Their wedding party brought a playful energy to every moment. Formal portraits quickly gave way to goofy poses, exaggerated gestures, and laughter that filled the forest. This wasn’t a surprise — at their engagement session, the very first thing Sam did was grab Dennis and say, “we have to pretend to be that float! You make this shape, and I’ll make that one.”
On their wedding day, she carried that same playful spirit into the portraits, making them some of the most memorable images of the entire gallery.

Their grand entrance set the tone, with drinks held high and cheers echoing through the lodge. The reception took place inside the Group Shelter, where long tables were lined with mis-matched patterned runners, sparkling drinks, and more of the wildflowers that tied the day together.

The three-tier cake, adorned with lemon slices and berries, was one of the day’s splurges — and it was as striking as it was delicious. They cut into it and enjoyed a slice together before moving to the dance floor.

But the first dance wasn’t without a hiccup: with no DJ, Sam’s brother manned the music through an aux cord, only to discover that the sound was coming out in one channel. The song started, but it was unrecognizable with only the left audio coming through. In the problem solving the song was restarted not once but three times before the issue was fixed. It could have been a stress point — instead, it became a hilarious moment that perfectly reflected the unpolished, joy-filled vibe of the day. Later, they reclaimed the dance in a “first dance redemption” round to Closing Time, finally able to show off the moves they had practiced.

For Sam and Dennis, their Cloudland Canyon wedding wasn’t just about the two of them. It was about the community that made it possible. Dozens of family and friends pitched in with setup, takedown, florals, food, and all the small details. “We’re just so grateful to our friends and family for helping,” they said. “A solid 30 people at least pitched in… the event wouldn’t have been nearly as good without every single one of them.”
That community effort — paired with their adventurous spirit and refusal to conform to tradition — turned this day into something uniquely theirs.

“Lara was a great photographer!! Fun to be around, flexible, great photo ideas, and basically wrote our wedding timeline for us (which we needed). She was able to photograph our whole massive family and the photos we’ve seen so far have turned out great. She also had a great eye for location. She placed our arbor in the best possible spot. And she knows when to stop asking you to pose for pictures too, which is huge. We were worried about the awkwardness of being followed around by a camera during the reception. We didn’t even know she was there. Just truly stellar work.”

From private vows whispered in the forest, to goofy group portraits to a “first dance redemption,” this day was unforgettable. Sam and Dennis’ Cloudland Canyon wedding embodied everything they are: adventurous, authentic, and joyfully non-traditional. Here’s to many more road trips, dance floors, and years of love ahead.

This Cloudland Canyon wedding was extra special for me on a personal level. The last time I photographed a wedding here was for my friends Sara and Richard — back when I could count the number of weddings I’d shot on one hand. Now, almost four years and nearly a hundred weddings later, returning to this beautiful (and sometimes challenging) space felt like a full-circle moment. It was exciting to see how much my eye and my approach have grown, and to capture this day with the perspective and experience I’ve gained along the way
💫 Don’t make me wait another four years before coming back to this magical place. If you’re dreaming of your own Cloudland Canyon wedding, or planning any state park celebration, get in touch here — I’d love to capture your day.
