White Cliffs of Conoy Engagement Session | Caitlin and Tyler

There’s something especially rewarding about a location that feels a little earned, and Caitlin and Tyler’s White Cliffs of Conoy engagement session definitely fell into that category. Between the three of us, we had all done our own research beforehand, but somehow missed one very important detail: getting out to the cliffs involves about a mile-and-a-half walk each way. Thankfully, we were greeted with one of the most gorgeous spring evenings imaginable, and by the end of the session, we all agreed the hike was absolutely worth it. That said, when I go back, I’m bringing a bike.

As the sun dropped lower over the Susquehanna River, the entire landscape started glowing in warm golds and soft oranges, giving us the kind of sunset photographers dream about.

What surprised me most about this location was how much variety we were able to create despite the cliffs themselves having a relatively small footprint. Between the rolling white terrain, the water views, the dramatic sunset sky, and the changing direction of light, every few steps gave us something completely different to work with. Caitlin and Tyler were naturals together in front of the camera. One of my favorite parts of engagement sessions like this is how the environment naturally encourages couples to slow down and just experience the evening together. Out at the cliffs, there’s very little distraction beyond the sound of the water, the breeze, and the changing light. It created this calm atmosphere that really allowed Caitlin and Tyler’s connection to take center stage.

The History Behind the White Cliffs of Conoy

One of the most interesting things about the White Cliffs is that they aren’t actually a natural formation. The cliffs are remnants of limestone and dolomite quarry operations that date back to the mid-1800s. Over time, excess material from the quarrying process was deposited along the Susquehanna River, eventually creating the striking white landscape that exists today.

The area was once home to a thriving company town called Billmyer, which supported the quarry operations and nearby lime factories. At its height, the industry played an important role in supplying agricultural lime and materials used in steel production and iron furnaces. By the 1950s, quarry operations had shut down, and nature slowly reclaimed the landscape.

Today, the White Cliffs have become one of the most unique scenic overlooks in Lancaster County, sitting roughly 30 feet above the Susquehanna River and connected by the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail.

As the sun finally dipped below the horizon, we ended the session with some of the most beautiful golden light imaginable reflecting across the river. It was the perfect ending to a session that felt equal parts adventure and quiet date night.

If you’re considering a White Cliffs of Conoy engagement session, a little preparation definitely goes a long way. Comfortable shoes for the walk are a must, and giving yourself plenty of time before sunset makes the hike much more enjoyable. But if you’re willing to make the trek, the payoff is incredible. Between the unique landscape, the water views, and the way the sunset lights up the cliffs, it’s easily one of the most visually striking engagement session locations in Pennsylvania.
